2022 Playoffs
The Division 1 regular season top seed was again the defending champion ATX Thunder. In two close matchups with the Austin Mudcats, they prevailed in the semifinal sweep. Just as they did last year, they faced the Austin Reds to try to defend their 2021 championship. Just as they did last year, they prevailed, this time with a late rally in the deciding game. This is the Thunder's third straight CTBL Division 1 title, and franchise fourth straight overall.
In Division 2, the top-seeded Austin Villain prevailed over the third seed Rebels to claim their first division crown, after finishing as runners-up in two previous years. In the first round, the Villain got past the Devil Rays and the Rebels dispatched the Armadillos.
2021 Spring Champions
Division 1: ATX Thunder, who swept the Astros and Reds to win the Division 1 title.
In the 2021 CTBL season, the 1-seed ATX Thunder (16-4-2), managed by Jon Cuip, defeated the 3-seed Austin Reds (15-8-1) in the Championship series, earning their second CTBL title (back to back) and 3rd straight Austin area summer Championship trophy. In the game 1 of the championship series, pitchers Pete Creamer and Dillon Mangham only gave up one run and led the Thunder to a 6-1 win, while Brandon Worden led the Thunder going 4 for 4 with a HR and 4 RBI. In game 2, the Reds stormed back and took an early lead 4-1 after 3, but in the 4th the Thunder exploded for 8 runs and took the lead 9-4, nevertheless the Reds were able to come back and take the lead 11-10 with a 5 run 7th inning. The Thunder, down to the last out, managed to tie the game after a B.Worden double, forcing extra innings. In the top half of extra innings, a clutch go ahead GW RBI double from Eric Worden sealed the championship (12-11).
The 2021 semi-finals the Austin Reds, managed by Brandon Landreth defeated the Zephyrs (14-7), managed by Adam McDougal in a closely matched 3 game series, going on to win a decisive game 3 (9-4). In the other semi-final game the ATX Thunder swept the Austin Astros (10-9-1), managed by Jake Baldarama, in two closely contested games winning game 1 (5-3), and game 2 in extra innings (14-12). All teams fought extremely hard all season in what turned out to be a very competitive league from top to bottom and the best 18+ league in the Austin area.
In Division 2, the Cuyaguas defeated the Rays and then Villain to complete their sweep.
Spring 2019 Recap
DivisionI:
In their inaugural CTBL season, the 1-seed Thunder (21-5) defeated the 2-seed Astros (18-8-1) in the Championship series, earning their first CTBL title and 2nd straight spanning the Austin area. In the decisive game-3, the Thunder jumped out to an 11-0 lead after 5 innings, led by 3-run homers from Brandon Worden and Ricky “the Dragon.” The Astros fought back, scoring 6 runs in the 6th, but winning pitcher Dillon Mangham recovered, ultimately throwing a complete game in the 11-7 Thunder victory.
The Astros also had a great inaugural CTBL season, beating the Thunder 6-3 in game-1 behind a complete game effort from AJ Crider. The Astros fought through a tough 3-game semi-final series, surviving a dramatic game-2 loss, to prevail over the 3-seed Mudcats (15-9) with a 1-0 walk-off game 3. The 4-seed Zephyrs (13-10-1) defeated the 5-seed Reds (12-10) in the wildcard game, but were swept by the Thunder in semi-finals.
Division II:
In the new CTBL Division II, the Villain ran the table with a deep lineup and pitching staff, going 16-0-1, with the only blemish a tie with the Landsharks in their first matchup. The Landsharks, meanwhile, lost only to the Villain all regular season, setting up a playoff matchup between the teams.
Games 1 and 2 were split by an identical 14-6 score, with the Landsharks winning the opener behind a solid start from Joe Rodriguez, and the Villain evening things with a Saturday win. In the deciding game, Joe Rodriguez won again with a complete game victory, and added a grand slam to boot.
Spring 2018 Recap
The Zephyrs improved on their 2017 season, finishing with an overall record of 22-3, and winning their 2nd straight league championship. The Zephyrs defeated the Reds in a back-and-forth game 1, and overcame a slow start to emphatically win game 2. The Reds (18-6-1) had a great year, and earned their way to the championship series by sweeping the Mudcats (14-7-2) in back to back extra inning nail-biters. The 5-seed Rangers (11-12-1) defeated the surprise 4-seed Diamondbacks (14-7-1) in the wildcard game before being swept by the Zephyrs in an offensive opening playoff series.
Spring 2017
The Zephyrs dominated the regular season, clinching the 1-seed with a month to go. The Reds and Mudcats battled all season for the 2 and 3-seeds, finishing a half-game apart. The Rangers beat the Peacemakers in the final weekend to earn the 4-seed. In a bit of a surprise, the Mudcats dominated the Reds in the 1st round of the playoffs, while the Rangers forced game 3 against the Zephyrs.
The Zephyrs capped off a solid spring with their 1st championship! They handled a competitive league with authority, experiencing only a few speed bumps along the way. The Mudcats battled through more adversity during the regular season, but the talented squad got hot at the right time, creating an excellent championship series match-up.
The opening weekend of the championship series featured a pair of come from behind victories. The Zephyrs celebrated a walk-off, 6-5, game 1 victory, coming back from a 5-1 deficit. The next day, the Zephyrs led 1-0 in the bottom of the 8th, before the Mudcats took the lead and series momentum, winning game 2, 2-1. Game 3 was sure to be an epic match-up with Zephyr Kevyn Torres facing Mudcat Matt Plitt. The Zephyrs opened the scoring in the 4th inning, scored every inning thereafter, and played error-free defense behind Kevyn to win in dominant fashion, 12-1.
Fall 2016
An action-packed Fall season ended with a memorable Championship Series.
Game 1
The series led off with a pitchers duel between Kevyn Torres of the Reds and Hilario Garcia of the Peacemakers. Garcia pitched a great game giving up 2 runs, but Torres spun a gem of his own, a 13-strikeout No-Hitter.
Game 2
This was one for the ages, going 12 innings. A platoon of Peacemakers pitchers: Sergio Perez, Kelly Wunsch and Hilario Garcia held the Reds to 3 runs. Kevyn Torres took the mound for the Reds againa and went 10 innings, suspending play due to the lights going off at the end of the night tied 3-3.
On Sunday at Noon the teams returned to the field and continued the game. The Reds dealt the final blow in the 12th; started with a leadoff bunt by RJ Rayos, who had entered the game in the 10th inning as a pinch-runner. Rayos stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball. Brandon Landreth hit a ball just out of the reach of a leaping Peacemakers pitcher to go ahead. Bottom of the twelfth Reuben Miller sealed the victory with three strikeouts to bring the Reds their 3rd championship.
Spring 2016
The Austin Mudcats added to their storied program's long list of championships this weekend, defeating the upstart Rangers 13-4 and 7-3 to win the best-of-three series.
The Mudcats finish the season with 9 straight wins including a 4-0 playoff run as the #1 seed. They swept the Titans in the semifinal series, who had knocked off the #3 seed Zephyrs.
The Rangers had come in on a hot streak, winning 7 straight games. They rallied to make the playoffs, beat the higher-seeded Reds in the quarterfinal game, upset the #2 seed Austin Peacemakers in a semifinal sweep to make the championship round.
Fall 2015
Following a pair of upsets in the semifinal round, the Patriots and Tropics faced off in the championship game. The sixth-seeded Patriots led 6-5 going into the bottom of the 8th inning before the five-seed Tropics blew it open, prevailing 11-6. The teams had defeated the #1 seed and #2 seed in the prior round.
