Titans 9-2 Winners Over Newcomers Texas Legion to Open 2016 Season!
The Titans start off 2016 right with a 6-run 1st inning and eventual 9-2 victory over the league newcomers, the Legion. Six Titan pitchers scattered 10 hits and struck out 12 in the game that went all nine frames. Defense was the name of the game as the Titans gave up no errors to the Legion's four. Titans look to take on the ArchAngels at 10AM on Sunday at Crockett HS, weather permitting...
The Texas Titans are entering their 8th Summer Season in the 10th year of CTBL History. The Titans were not in the inaugural season of 2007 and went to the MSBL Austin League as the Mariners in 2011. The Titans have made the playoffs all 7 summer seasons they have been in the CTBL, never finishing lower than 4th place. The challenge to make it 8 in a row seems greater then ever in 2016 with what could be the most talented group of teams the CTBL has seen in 5+ years.
Weather permitting, we should be in for an exciting season with some new teams, some old ones, and some merged ones ready to show off their skills!
Texas Titans Spring/Summer CTBL History:
2008 CHAMPIONS - Tigers team name went 18-7-1 finishing in 3rd place regular season, but had a strong playoff showing and defeated Diablos in the final game 4-3 at Dell Diamond.
2009 CHAMPIONS - Titans and their new name and uniforms won back to back titles defeating a rising team the A's in the first night championship game in CTBL history with an 8-4 over the A's at Dell Diamond. The Titans started 3-2 but then won 18 straight games before losing game 2 of semifinals vs their arch rival Diablos. The Titans won a close game 3 by a score of 7-6 after almost blowing a 7-0 lead. Titans finish with their best record ever 23-3.
2010 4th Place - Titans came out strong to start the season, going 12-3 and in first place through 15 games when injruies and a great A's team rolled them the last two games of regular season, and again in a 2-game playoff sweep to lose 7 out of last 10 games and finish 15-10. Titans lost the 3rd place game at Dell Diamond 2-1 to the Bandidos.
2010 28+ CHAMPIONS - 9 Members of the Titans played in the first ever 28+ title game as the Austin Mariners and defeated the Zephyrs at the Dell Diamond 8-3 to finish with a 20-4 record. It was the only season the Mariners existed in CTBL history. Quite possibly the most dominant Titans/Mariners squad ever.
2011 Titans left the CTBL as the Mariners and went to the 18+ division in AMSBL. The injury bug bit again, along with losing key players like the Holcomb brothers, and the Mariners struggled going just 8-16 losing 11 games by 3 runs or less.
2012 4th Place - Titans realized life isn't always greener on the other side of the fence, and came back to CTBL. Titans struggled down the stretch, eventually losing the 3rd game of the semi finals in extra innings to the Buckets/Reds and lost the 3rd place game to the Rangers. The Titans finished 13-10-1 in 2012.
2013 2nd Place - The Titans returned to the finals after starting the season 16-0 and wrapped up the regular season with an impressive 19-1 record only to lose game 1 of the semifinal series to Rangers, but bounced back to win games 2 and 3 to return to their 3rd finals appearance. In what has, so far, been the most exciting final series in CTBL history, the Titans lost game 1 to the Isotopes by a score of 5-4, then won game 2 6-4 to set up a much-anticipated game 3. Titans lost game 3 in dramatic fashion, down 11-10 with the bases loaded and 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th inning before surrendering the final out to the Isotopes. The Titans finished just 6-4 after that 16-0 start for a 22-4 record but no title. One pitch short!
2014 4th Place - Titans started hot then struggled before playing well down the stretch to finish as 4th seed at 11-6-3 with 2 ties to the 2nd place Rangers. Titans couldn't find an answer for a tough Reds squad that year, going 0-4-1 vs the eventual champion Reds, including a 2-game sweep in semi finals. Titans lost the 3rd place game badly to the Zephyrs and went just 11-9-3 in 2014, finishing with their worst record in CTBL summer league history.
2015 "The Asterisk Season" - Titans returned to the finals and won Game 1 5-2 over the Mudcats on Saturday in Georgetown behind the strong pitching of Scott Holcomb. The Cats returned the favor the next day in Game 2, beating the Titans 12-2 and setting up the rubber-match for the following Sunday. Despite their claims of being worried about having enough guys for a second weekend, the Mudcats showed up with 14 guys and won 6-4 thanks to a 9th inning HR by Ben (not to be confused with Himes) "Parker"....
